What do you know about diamonds?

Diamonds are the most highly sought after gem in the world and they have long been popular on engagement rings, wedding rings and other pieces of jewellery. Indeed, diamond rings and other such articles are at the top of the pecking order when it comes to trinkets.

However, relatively few people know how and when diamonds are formed. These stones are around 99.95 per cent pure crystallised carbon and this means they are extremely hard. Indeed, they are the hardest naturally occurring substance known to man.

Also, the gems can be extremely old. Experts suggest that some may be between one and three billion years old. They are formed beneath the surface of the Earth and are brought close to the exterior through volcanic eruptions.

When volcanoes erode down, they released their diamonds from their feed pipes into layers of gravel, which are then mined by people.

The reason why diamonds are so precious is because they are rare. There are only a few places around the world that feature such stones because the process that forms them does not happen often.

When the gems are taken from the ground, they are not much to look at. It is only through the process of shaping and polishing that their beauty and brilliance is achieved.

So, next time you don an item of diamond jewellery, maybe you will spend a moment thinking about the history of the object. If you do, it will seem even more special and valuable to you.
