Indian Railways has one of the Largest & Busiest Rail Networks in the World, Transporting over 18 million passengers and more than 2 million tones of freight daily. It is the world’s largest commercial employer, with more than 1.4 million employees. The railways traverse the length & breadth of the country, covering 6,909 stations over a total route length of more than 63,327 kilometers. As per the rolling stock Indian Railways owns 2, 00,000 Wagons, 50,000 Coaches & 8,000 locomotives.
Railways were first introduced in India in 1953 April 26th. By 1947 the year of India’s Independence, they were 42 rail systems in our country. In the year 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. Indian Railways operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of Broad, Meter & Narrow gauges. Now Indian Railways owns Locomotive and Coach Production facilities.
Indian Railways operates about 9,000 passenger trains and transports 18 million passengers daily across 28 states and two union territories. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh & Meghalaya are the only states not connected by rail. The Passenger Division is the most preferred form of long distance transport in most of the country. A Standard Passenger train consists of 18 coaches. But some popular trains can have up to 24 coaches.
